Presentation

In Spain the production of electricity from coal combustion accounts for about 15-20% of the total. The large world reserves of this fuel suggest that its importance as an energy source will continue in the future. However, as with all other fossil fuels, its use produces a very high emission of polluting gases. In particular, greenhouse effect gases.

In this regard, in recent years there has been an intense research effort towards the development of technologies for clean coal, including CO2 capture, co-firing with biomass, oxyfuel combustion situations, etc.

In this context, the main aim of the workshop is to discuss the recent advances in mathematical modelling of combustion and its industrial applications addressing the following topics:

  • Development of devolatilization models and gasification of “char”.
  • Feasibility analysis that the biomass co-combustion has in a conventional-sized power station.
  • Strategies for capturing CO2.
  • Analysis and modelling of boilers in oxy-combustion situations.
  • Industrial applications.

International specialists will deliver the lectures as well as people directly involved with industry in order to suggest applications that will require the development and solution of combustion models. Also this workshop should open new lines of research taking into account the current industrial demand and should serve as a starting point to begin or continue collaborative relationships between the various participants.
